We already spoke of Christmas in Alghero a few posts ago, and we can confirm that the programme was fully carried out, that here everything is fine and dandy and the amount of poetry inspired by our town has grown much more than the inflation rate over the same period – great news!
Now all we have to do is talk about Christmas as such – But does Christmas still exist? Is there anything we can still say about it? We all know the negative aspects – a lust for consumer goods, superficiality, hypocrisy, the casting down of idols. But there are also positive aspects: brotherly love, spirituality, deep feelings, holiness, beauty. Original, through-provoking thoughts have been said about Christmas, as well as old and stale thoughts, merry thoughts, serious thoughts, lofty thoughts, shallow thoughts, moving thoughts and cynical thoughts. Many, many things have been said, but also written, recited, sung, painted, photographed, shared and commented.
All things being equal, it would seem that everything possible has already been said about Christmas and there is nothing to add. So it might be wiser over these days to cast anchor in the restorative bay of silence without feeling the urge to say anything in particular. It’s best to let Christmas arrive, purify and renew us, inspiring the words we shall need in the rest of the year when we shall have to know well what to say and how to say it.
So this is our very special wish for you: that this Christmas brings you all the words you most desire to say and hear. So, a very merry Christmas!
