In Italy, we wake up to sweetness – cappuccino e cornetto: this is the typical breakfast of an Italian, at home or at the bar. And yet more – biscuits, leavened cakes, bread, jam and marmalade, honey, butter, fruit, fresh orange juice. A breakfast that is short and sweet, providing carbohydrates together with the proteins of milk and the energy of coffee. This is a tradition with its roots deep in Mediterranean history: think back to the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans, to their mainly farming economies and the food culture that grew out of all this.
The Hotel Catalunya, which prides itself on its openness to the exchange of experiences and cultures, offers in its breakfast menu a choice between the Mediterranean tradition of a sweet breakfast and the Northern European tradition of a salty breakfast. Our aim is to make everyone feel at home – including guests from northern Europe, from the UK and other European countries with different morning breakfast habits, looking for savoury, cooked dishes. But at the same time, we are happy to offer them a chance to sample the Italian breakfast tradition. Indeed, trying different foods is an important part of a holiday experience abroad. So we can define our breakfasts as continental breakfasts with a strong Mediterranean flavour.
Our breakfast is based on slices of fresh bread, muesli, cornflakes in several tastes, two types of cake, four varieties of croissant, jams, Nutella spread, season’s fruit, yogurt, sliced cheeses, three varieties of sliced charcuterie, scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes, milk, fruit juices. Finally, cappuccino, latte, milk and chocolate, coffee, tea, and herb teas comprise the hot drinks available, prepared on the spot by our staff to order.
